Thursday, May 5th, 2011. The day I picked her up from the airport. Left work early and drove in to Logan with butterflies in my stomach! I was so nervous. This is my first dog so I had no idea what to expect when I picked her up in the Continental Airlines Cargo Department. My mind ran on and on the whole way in... "Would she be scared of me? Will she be covered in God knows what from a long flight from Texas? What if she looked different, would I recognize her? I hope she doesn't get sick on the way home! Will I have everything she needs? Would we even get along?"
As I stood at the counter with the other anxious soon to be puppy parents, sharing our stories my apprehension grew and grew. And after what seemed like an eternity the crates arrived! Three tiny little face stared back at us exhausted, and a little unsure, but very curious. I waited in line and when I finally arrived to stand on tip toe to peer over the counter and I could not have been more excited. I watched as the woman behind the desk cut the plastic ties holding her crate securely shut and I felt like I was watching a ribbon cutting at a grand opening! This was it! She gently lifted her crate and handed her over to me! She was mine!
I quickly gathered my things and hurried outside. I placed the crate on the seat of my car and slowly opened the crate door. I could not have asked for anything better! She bounded out of the crate and into my arms and immediately began laying sloppy kisses all over my chin. That was it, in that moment she had won my heart! She was a colossal 8 pound ball of love and raring to go! We quickly jumped out of the car did our business and dined on a glamorous meal of hotdog and water. Once satisfied we set out for home.
Nestled safely in the car and en route home our real first adventure began. She leapt from left to right here to there, sniffing anything and everything she could get her nose on! Curious of the new world she had been thrown into and without a single hesitation. She was like a like a tiny little tornado but I couldn't be happier for the destruction and chaos to ensue. About 15 minutes later, and for the first time in my life I was actually thankful for rush hour traffic. Sitting at a stand still tends to give you plenty of opportunity to lend your attention elsewhere.
And no sooner did I think this and low and behold she had run herself to sleep and found an all too perfect spot in the passenger's side. As she laid down she started to whimper. I offered my hand for her to smell, as some form of comfort. And to my surprise she laid her head down on my hand and drifted off to sleep. Exhausted. Content. Adorable. Mine. Just me and my new co-pilot! Ready for our adventures to begin (just after this quick nap)!
